It is just a little drama added to the fluff. I imagine it will go back to being light hearted, but I personally don't mind a little depth to the characters and a little conflict for the main characters to overcome.

I really liked the light novel, and this manga has been a fun adaptation to it. I just wish they would be a little quicker on the releases. I need my Death mage fix. I think this is around chapter 13 or so of the light novel.

MC should just quit and defect to Blue Garden. They would appreciate him more and like Kenkagejack said he could just crush them economically, with his inventions.
