Gerbera is the most adorable maou I've ever seen in any fiction.

What it seems to be is that they're not actually his mother, at least not originally. She got taken and consumed by them, and they became her by taking on her memories and personality "in this cycle".

This is somehow worse than MTL, at least that wouldn't also have spelling mistakes.
