MangaDex@Home Update, New Affiliates, Looking for a Symfony dev, and a User Research Survey

Since read errors from md @ h nodes are to be expected, the reader should just try again from another node if the first one fails, showing the user an error message only when the second one fails as well. Since there’s a major rewrite planned, maybe that can be put on the feature wishlist.

Long term strategies to address bandwidth issues and running costs: MangaDex@Home + Affiliates + BTC

@Yair Has been mentioned before: Yes, that’s easily possible. All you need is to install OpenJDK. If you’re running headless, you need to download the CLI version of the Speedtest. Note that for RPi 1-3, the speed of the SD-card is the limiting factor.

Long term strategies to address bandwidth issues and running costs: MangaDex@Home + Affiliates + BTC

@TheDragonLord Apparently, images are retrieved from md@\h nodes simply via HTTPS, which makes sense since every browser supports it. I just checked a node that served a chapter I wanted to read and got these encryption parameters: TLS 1.2, ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256, Curve X25519, certificate...

    Futaribeya - Vol. 8 Ch. 64

@Tromend Well, she says that she’s been told that “friends don’t normally find work at the same place”. Due to the “find” in there, I read that as that friends normally don’t get the chance to work at the same place. I guess it could be either because it’s hard to find an employer that offers...

SHIBUYA: Gal Yuri Anthology - Ch. 1 - Reverse line by Yorumo

@Xr2 Please translate the floating text outside or on the edge of bubbles too. If you can’t redraw that, placing the translation with sufficiently large stroking across it is still better than leaving it untranslated. Thanks.

Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon - Vol. 2 Ch. 8 - Injury and Realization

@Oeconomist said: For some reason, Japanese people really dig limited offers. Time-limited, amount-limited, low chance of actually getting what you want (*coughgachacough*)… doesn’t matter. If it’s limited, everyone wants it all of a sudden. I’ve seen this several times in manga already. Also...

New servers and file optimisation request!

@Ksetrar said: If you have to use JPEG and want to lossless further compression, try jpegrescan or MozJPEG. Nice on a *nix system, but I don’t know if/how they work on Windows. For grayscale pages, make sure to save/export your JPEGs as grayscale or use the optimizer’s grayscale option to get...

New servers and file optimisation request!

@Santiasan So it doesn’t “add unneccesary color” but messes up the colors you added. I don’t have Photoshop to try, but the “smaller file” option supposedly reduces the number of colors in the image. How about you just don’t use the “smaller file” option if it breaks things? Btw, if the color...

New servers and file optimisation request!

@Shin_968 Those settings aren’t that good, to say the least. 17 indexed colors is stupid because that requires 5 bits. 16 colors requires 4 bits and compresses better. The reasoning for using 17 given in that guide is basically “it’s flawed, but that’s what we’ve always been using”. Well...

New servers and file optimisation request!

@Guspaz said: Hint: You can get that done a lot easier. Select the area without colours in the image (or select the coloured part and invert the selection) and then use the Desaturate tool. Done. (That’s what it’s called in Gimp, but I’m sure Photoshop has it too.) The Desaturate tool is also...

New servers and file optimisation request!

If you optimize all uploaded images, I hope you’ll only use the output if it’s actually smaller than the original file. My groups’ uploads are already fully optimized using various techniques. ;) JPEGs can be optimized too. I use jpegrescan to losslessly optimize JPEGs. Yes, JPEGs are lossy...

tfw you read the recruitment page and really wish you knew what series those images are from… and then it says so right next to them.
