Why try and go to the surface? Here he's got food, water, and the only things that come by to try and kill him can't get past his traps. Whereas up there there's a lot more things to try and kill him, he has no traps to defend himself with, and unless he can figure out how to move to the next...

My personal bet is that he realized that something was going to go wrong, the prince was going to feel some need to off Will, and the Bishop's here blustering about the Prince and his men being fools. Or, if it is Will and co., that they're fools for just wandering into the Prince's place...
