The word リーチ actually comes from riichi mahjong, which in turn comes from the Chinese word 立直 (lìzhí, lit. standing upright), not from the English word reach. I think リーチ is best translated as simply riichi. The Japanese Wikipedia article on pachinko riichi discusses this further.
