It was implied to be him trying to send a message to other people thinking of trying the same thing so they would stay away. Then the whole noticing of the discarded snake skin, implying he was a snake that had shed...

Have to say, I am just enjoying this series. The little things about it because of the "rationality" at play just make it so nice. Like, it isn't being treated as "the worst thing in the world that my party abandoned me". Noel is a 16 year old C-rank in relatively good standing with his peers...

I'm going to guess this is an efficiency thing. He can probably recharge his mana supply faster than other people, because most nobles rely upon their naturally large mana reserves, where he has needed to refill his to do any sort of spell.
