I must have forgotten some earlier chapter, but how do people become vampires in this universe? Because clearly they aren’t born like that or else they wouldn’t be stuck at different ages. So is lifespan differences really a big concern?

I’m fond of CC Astro City myself. There is also an international version that has a lot more characters that are useful.
