@Syltom Magic Haki at that. It's why Fuse is so pissed at the end. In the WN it's explained that channeling magic through your weapon like that is REALLY difficult so him casually doing it makes him overly stand out.

@Pokari That's basically what happens in the WN. Fuse gets' displeased since it causes Rimuru to stand out too much, but the general feel is that he's just a tough as hell adventurer that the Trio happened to luck into finding.

To answer about the lifespan question...It's pretty much indefinite. As a slime he's the weakest of mobs and I dunno about their reproduction cycles or abundance, but they generally live forever and only die due to virtue of being the weakest enemies.
