@Kirin-kun Probably because the neighboring kingdom took his lover away so he is doing the same for their prince. He probably assumed that the prince and princess are lovers. Also it might just be to get the empire to attack the kingdom because their princess was died there.

This backstory doesn't align with the one we got in the beginning.... And why are we even getting backstory? This brings absolutely nothing to this manga. He already had motivation for revenge so why try to add more?
