Thanks @Mojo for the confirmation and context, glad Japanese law isn't like some of the setups. It's easy to say OK, it's alternate reality for sci fi or fantasy elements, but when it's differences in what is socially or legally acceptable there's often that nagging uncertainty as an American...

Does Japan actually allow minors to sign contracts without their parent's consent? I sometimes get confused by ridiculous story conceits that might just be legal or cultural differences (the "parents ran away and left children with debt" trope is similar for me and peeves me to no end)
