@Midoriha That's always in the back of my mind when I read period pieces set in the 1910's of Japan. It's like no matter what happens your world is screwed by the time your 40. My head-canon for that situation is that any survivors stick to the mountains and avoid conscription.

I don't know, somethings off about this wife to me. Even if she's 100 percent on her husbands side, this entire situation would freak anybody out even a little. My guess is she wanted say she's killed someone before if the husband had said the same.

God dammit this one got to me. Shinobu's death didn't feel real at first so it took a few chapters to accept, but this one shook me right away.
