I can only assume the mangaka simplified the mask design because they knew they’d be drawing it a lot. It isn’t described in detail in the WN as far as I can remember and the manga version, while plainer, is actually more like your average shaman mask.

The MC in the light novel is most definitely female: "現在、私こと『セフィリア』は、生後数ヶ月の女の子"
However, in the web novel the equivalent line read "現在、私こと『セフィリア』は生後3ヶ月目の乳児。この世界には男の子として生まれました。"
