One thing that is never pointed out enough about this series it's how time moves forward. We have seen Sakurako and Kasumi's entire HS and college lives. Now we will see them as working adults. This is quite incredible to be honest.

To me, it seems that Mahiro does like her, but she's not actually expecting a positive reply from Kayoko. Mahiro has been nothing but supportive of their relationship and this is probably just her way to clear the air for Kayoko.
