Soulmates is a completely wrong phrasing. Closer wording would've been "Best Friend", Kindred or even "bestie". Just don't get the reasoning behind using soulmate other than wanting to cram in just a little more gayness into the series. FYI affection or romance being disregarded is irrelevant...

If I remember Japanese 101 correctly Best Friend, Sworn Friends and Kindred is closer to Shinyuu than "Soulmates". I could be wrong, but I'm 100% sure they used soulmates to rile up the degenerate yaoi crowds.
