He's going to claim to have feelings for Nanami, isn't he. That seems like the obvious way to push this farce. That way Nanami can overhear them secretly. Also sets up a future plot where the friend thinks there's some kind of love triangle shenanigans going on.

If there were more issues left, I'd expect a plot point around Mom checking the call log. There's probably enough pages left to do that, and get backstory on the family history, but it's probably going to feel a bit rushed if the final issue does that.
