Fantastic one shot, both the story and the art are top. Also, I know its quite different, but this couple really reminds me of Cait Sith and Akari (https://mangadex.org/chapter/28800/2) from the manga Aria. Amazing manga, off to reread it now that I've been reminded of it.

The part I like best about this chapter is that Risa didn't tell the kid what he should do. Didn't say he should quit the mage route, and start the culinary route. All she did was let him see something new, and said he should share how he feels with his family. It's just nice.

I think colored flash cards would work well for communicating with the Lizardmen and Krakens. Lots of trial and error, but you could eventually have a set of colored cards with human definitions on one side and color definitions on the other.
