In the Light Novel description of this scene, the reason why Haruko does not fall into the pit is because Gobta and the other guy kept looking at them so he knew something was up.

@DANDAN_THE_DANDAN for best genetic compatibility having children with your second cousin is preferred. First cousins are okay but too much of that through the generations is not so good and even then it's a bit dodgy. You share grandparents and so recessives may show up.
