@jebjordan I think the control ability needs you to have higher magic power to overcome another. In RPG terms, you need to have higher MAG/INT stat than the target. Hyper regen affects MP.

@Miranox I would assume that they were under some guild/country with sexist policies. "Only a man can inherit a shop" was telling. The father needed the son to inherit the shop, and talent means nothing if they weren't allowed to do business within the area.
