@dssmith there is two ants there in the chapter, no Beru. He probably took him to Japan as he will need him now. Even if not, the ants have needed Beru before to discipline them after they act in a more basic way.

I would not trust those ants for any protection much less of relatives, given how many times they had to be corrected to behave as intended.
