That's because many chapters aren't in chronological order. Most of them are set in their second year, so that could be seen as the "present" of the series, and this chapter would be a flashback.

As (almost) always, the chess depicted doesn't make any sense. Particularly unlikely the prince's turnaround, that defends from a check giving a checkmate. It isn't impossible per se, but it definitely is from what we can see. Not to mention the fact that in every panel there's a different board...

Misfit Scans and the translator of Golden Kamuy are probably the only ones I'd be willing to give money to, if I had any. And they probably wouldn't even accept it.
The art is nice, but that's pretty much it. Not only is a mass of unoriginal tropes badly pasted together, it's very stupid (not in a good sense), both in plot and dialogue.
