While normally I dislike this sort of worry 24/7 trait in characters, I think its been pulled off pretty decently here. It's fun watching the MC's increasingly elaborate date prep and research, and it shows how much he genuinely wants to make things work.

I don't get it. Is the MC deliberately written to be a completely unlikeable person, or are we actually supposed to like him?

The Samovar anecdote is from Chekov's travel account of his visits to Sakhalin/Karafut from the 1890s. Its little stuff like that, that shows the mangaka's done a lot of reading/research in the area.

@BigCoffee: I can't tell if its intentional on the mangaka's part or not. Sometimes it seems like the message is supposed to be "shut in NEET life is amazing and cool", but the overall atmosphere of the manga just comes across really depressing.
