so he's want her to wield that sword to kill him. His story is so close to her story. Bet the knight even knew she was going to die. It doesn't excuse him being an asshole though.
A person is an asshole to him, so becomes an asshole to people which leads to a god stepping in to show that there is always a bigger asshole.
He keeps being an asshole until he learns how to stop via suicide by being an asshole.
