I'm guessing that his older personality contributed heavily to how he played the piano. Now that he's calmer, those emotions are no longer present when he's playing.

Call it bittersweet if you want, I don't see how it's sad.
If he was a human he'd have grown up to be a great musician and then killed himself before he turned 30.
This way he can be a normal member of society.
