Near the beginning of the chapter, I was like, "Ah, yes, he's doing the sane thing, returning the money and getting the heck out of this situation—" ... next page ... "Oh. Nevermind."

Well, this is more fun for a story, though, even if the life choices aren't necessarily the healthiest.
