She certainly did say her daughter abandoned him, but either the mangka decided to change the story, or that was her gruff way of trying to say her daughter died without getting emotional.

They showed the memorial pictures of his parents in his grandmother's house when she was leaving to go to the wedding. Then showed them again when she was crying and asking "is it alright for me to experience all of this happiness alone"

I think it is kind of weird that he changed his surname to his wife's. I think that means the wife's parents basically adopted him into their family. If his parents had abandoned him, then I could see why he would do that, but since they died, it seems kind of disrespectful of him to change his surname.
