@Shrimpy Even most manga don't really bother changing the modern laws at all if the setting is more or less based in the present. I just finished reading one that ended with a lesbian wedding. The characters specifically pointed out how they were holding a ceremony that meant absolutely nothing from a legal standpoint. So while you're absolutely correct that any author could just do what they want, they generally don't bother to rock the boat on this issue.
