The granddad was friends with Tenkei and trained Assasins for him. While Tenkai was busy the Shoguns son Hidetada and Munenori killed Granddad and the others.

At the end Granddad realized that it wasnt Tenkai, but these 2. He wanted to warn Azumi, but died before she arrived. He didnt want her to be manipulated by them to kill Ieyasa. Bit annoying to tell with so many different factions and names though.
