You can check this out.

https://mangadex.org/title/6393/seirei-no-moribito

Edit: Oops, it's manga though. I don't know if there's an anime adaptation.

Youjo Senki

Hyperdimension Neptunia is the best one.

Killing slimes for 300 years
Douyara Watashi
Tenkuu Shinpan

Edit: woops! Anime only.

Kino's Journey

Rolling Girls (I wouldn't say it was great, but it was pretty)

Last Exile sequel ( not as good as the first one, but still good)

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

Kill la Kill (Super weird and kinda stupid, but the art and animation is really nice)

Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt (Humor is on the same level as the Scary Movie franchise, but it's entertaining)

Michiko x Hatchin (cheating a bit with this one)

K-on (I think, I didn't watch it, but heard other people did and liked it)

Sakura Quest (just started watching, but seems good)

I don't know, this is just off the top of my head.

Girls' Last Tour

Violet Evergarden
Made in Abyss
Hibike! Euphonium
A Place Further Than The Universe
The Ancient Magus' Bride
Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid
Yuru Camp
Land of the Lustrous
Yuru Yuri
Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms
Ascendance of a Bookworm
Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!
Asobi Asobase
Carole & Tuesday
Dorohedoro

Obviously whether you consider any of them the "best" will depend on your taste, so I listed a handful of anime of varying genres that are generally rated fairly highly.

Anne of Green Gables (my top1 ever got a female protag already lol)
Ghost in the Shell (Stand Alone Complex especially)
Dear Brother (not for faint hearted)

Ascendance of a Bookworm
Bofuri: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense
Carole And Tuesday
Gambling School
Himouto! Umaru-chan
Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro
Psycho Pass
Saga of Tania The Evil (not really a “girl” but still I see the MC like one)
Shangri La
Zombie land Saga

I only wrote those I really loved and with almost no romance at all.

(Ps : @Nitronic0 I totally agree with ascendance of a bookworm and carole&tuesday, but Violet Evergarden is at last half romance)

Killing slimes for 300 years is getting an anime soontm

though please read the manga I swear I'm not biased in any way at all

@potatofood
reading your spoily post, it makes me wonder if you have some expereince regarding that topic.

@girlgaze
girl, you must watch Black Fox and BNA.

Girls und Panzer is good too, right @Richman!?

Or perhaps you want some universal Protagonist??? If yes then Gintama is the answer...

and the top notch one is YuYuYuYu
