I think she's surprised because he remembers that her friend's family runs a cake shop. I feel like it's a little unclear because the panel is focusing on her face, but I think that he's saying the line about the cake shop rather than her.

Well I think it's either that he had more important things to remember (you saw signs that he was too distracted like when Sei tried to call out to him numerous times, so his mind was distracted)
OR
He's connecting her question to what happened that day and what he was doing.
I feel like it's either or but if it's something completely different, well... o.o color me surprised?
