I wonder how remedial classes work in Japan. Is it like an extra period of school, or like after-school detention?

@SpookiLurkr From what I understand, all of that plus compulsory summer school if you suck too much.
 
This is why when I was in school, I'd lock myself in my room to prepare for exams while my cat waited outside (made it a point to teach them to not go into my room)
