I think that MC going to the hospital is to visit his father. I think he is lying to his younger sister about their dad always working.

We haven't seen any signs in "present day" that he has problems with his memory. If I am right about the father's status, I can see how not remembering a brief conversation for a couple of weeks ago is viable. He for sure has more important things on his mind.
