Having used MD for over a year now, I love the site and its organization. However, I do find that there's quite a lack of tagging that happens. While tag descriptions are probably somewhere in the works, another way to perhaps increase more and proper tagging is by, well, simply having more people who can tag things. (I say this because I feel super responsible for tagging stuff as someone who can, but yeah, more people should be able to in general.)
I get that there's probably some wariness over the misuse of tagging, hence the limited Contributor numbers (ranks above that are probably in the clear due to the nature of what they do). But thinking of ways that aren't so back-end heavy maybe (?), it might be useful to have uploaders who hit a certain number of uploads (proving their general trustworthiness, I guess) and have an account for X amount of time be able to gain the Contributor status. Yes, I am aware of Power Uploaders; but in general, hitting 500 uploads is uh, not the easiest, so uploading a number (100? 200?) of works less than that, coupled with a not brand-new account, will probably show good intent.
Speaking of which, most people still aren't aware of Power Uploaders, since that announcement was made a number of months now and new people join every day. Just adding a few bullet points about the meaning of different ranks to the About page would probably be helpful in the long run if it's not already planned.
