Holy hell, Japan's suicide rate compared to the US, which also has a problem is bad. It's close to double, proportionally.
I believe both countries suicides are mostly or largely older men who are terminally ill. We have different pressures but we both have trouble finding meaning with the pressure to go to school, do well in careers or even following dreams we may not be suited for (the latter strengthened by Western individualism). It's complicated but I think that pressure post the loss of certain industries plays a role.
Bizarre anecdote--Around 15 years ago, I saw an infographic in a natural foods store (bathroom of all places) showing link between high fish consumption and depression rates. Japan, they claimed, was an extremely happy place. It was astonishing. Depression may be under diagnosed, it could have been old data. A reminder to scrutinize data. It's clearly not the airy fairy lala land these crunchy people imagined.
