Matsuo is serious. If you can decipher word salad I suggest trying to read the MTL-versions of this novel that are out there.

The fact that he pissed rather than spit in the furnace to refine his pill also better explains something happening in the next chapter:

the judge girl can't determine the pill's grade by eye but is reluctant to try the yellow/golden pill which was made at least partly with piss.
