Yeah, I'm pleased he did have the wits to lie. He would have only sealed his own death by telling the truth. Both of them. It's quite interesting, nonetheless, that everybody and their uncles are lying in this series. You never see this in manga. In manga people almost always speak the truth, even the worst the villains. If a mangaka wants to make an especially terrifying criminal mastermind, like Aizen, then it's possible the character will tell a single lie during the whole story.
