I can't understand Goku sometimes. Before, he was acting nice trying to be fair and square to Cell, give him a Sanzu bean to regen. Now when Gohan waited for Cell to regenerate his parts, he urged Gohan to finish him off?? I didn't realize reading it when I was a child, but this is such a nonsense...

There are two reasons Goku acts weird this arc. The in-universe reason is that he wants Gohan to become a fighter and he thinks that if he can make Gohan acknowledge how strong he is he'll naturally want to do it more, like the full-blooded Saiyans. The out-of-universe reason is that Toriyama wanted Gohan to become the central protagonist, so he needed to establish that Gohan was somehow better than Goku in ability, so he needed Cell to be as powerful as possible.

@gormadoc ah thank you, definitely the out universe reason that I felt really confused. Gohan finally become what his dad wanted him to be so Goku now could turn back to worry about the Earth's fate. That's it, right?
