Hawai'i gave legal recognition to same-sex marriage in early December of 2013. The UK recognized same-sex civil unions but not same-sex marriages until 2014 (albeït with an Act passed in 2013). Normally, it would have made better sense for this couple to go to Hawai'i than to England.
