So Maiko is definitely the person that Hina wants to see her in magazines but they had some kind of falling out that left Hina with some strong negative feelings. Hina also has strong romantic feelings towards Hana and has likely had those feelings for a while which rules out Maiko as being a romantic interest anytime recently.
Maiko being dead seems to account for all of this but that's a pretty dramatic call for me to make at this point so I'm not sure
