I reread the manga from the beginning. It seems like the mother's name means "dry grass" in human language.

I wonder if the action of offering the dry grass to the professor is her own way of saying that she is offering herself to him.

She also mentioned in the beginning of the manga that despite not sharing the language, they could understand courtship. I think this is the said courtship.
