Assuming this story takes place sometime in the 19th century or equivalent, there's plenty of territory inland (coastlines were generally known I would assume) to get lost in that isn't charted - there may not be a map. They seem to specialize in researching flora, fauna or indigenous cultures, not cartography. Not saying it's wise for them to be exploring uncharted territory with some grounding in navigation...
