two major tropes in Japanese horror are here: don't disturb the monsters (see Fuan no Tane for great examples of this, seriously just endless), and don't push back on custom. Here, the mother tries to set up her daughter with a nice man in a solid marriage, and because she rebels she gets karmically punished.
