I'll always remember a metaphor relating fish to erections or rather the lack thereof from The Sun Also Rises as part of a discussion in English literature class. If I remember correctly, two of the characters go on a fishing trip, and the fish they catch are described as firm vs flaccid, as one of the characters in The Sun Also Rises has ED from a war injury. Fits well into Hemingway's themes of love, loss, and masculinity/emasculation, and also animals and the outdoors. The Old Man and The Sea is fairly family-friendly by Hemingway standards
