"fights" are not the same as sparring matches and if the students were to fight one another they would just "start punching each other" usually after a argument or some other interaction but it is not impossible for it to be out of nowhere also, think of a bar fight for this one.
Of course fights and sparring matches are different, the fact that they're different means that there're still a 'get-set-go' accepted by both parties.
