@A1B2C3 His Mom apparently abandoned him as a kid because she "wasn't cut out to be a Mom", so Shou is the first family that Falco has had—she effectively fills a hole in his heart as an older brother/father figure. She is akin to his childhood self and by helping her, raising her, etc., he's filling the hole in his own heart, caring for that impacted child who suffered greatly and still to that point in the story, suffers. :3
