@xtremeloldude Conscription isn't necessarily negative, especially in a feudal society like this where a standing military might not exist as a social class. The army is probably all conscripted militia, who would be motivated to learn how to fight so their home doesn't get burned to the ground if they go to war with someone else. Likely the only full time military are the royal guards and the generals that train the militias.
