@mrmm As much bullshit as it is, I guess the theory behind it is that with enough force you can create a counter wind current to redirect gas-based flames away from you for the most part. Ain't going to do shit against napalm and other burning adhesives though.

Surprisingly, flame movement is susceptible to change in wind direction, especially one without solid source like flamethrower. Solid source just means the flame burns on but able solid object, like wood or coal.
