I remember being on a train in Japan a while back. Across the way was an elegantly-dressed Japanese woman in an elaborate kimono complete with hairpins, the sort with dangling ornaments. She was tapping away on a smartphone, her head nodding as she did so and the hairpin ornaments were swaying in time with her text entry. It was, well, quintessentially Japanese, both ancient and modern.
