You know what I like about these old fashioned stories? They're not meta. They're not genre aware. They're just telling a fucking story. So this is not the five-hundredth variation on dead-guy-reincarnated-with-powers or girl-is-unlikely-marriage-candidate-for-the-prince. The characters aren't busy doing-whatever-trope-but-turning-one-aspect-backwards, they're not breaking the fourth wall in little ways, they're not doing the standard shoujo manga event while saying "What is this, a shoujo manga?" to try to take out the sting or make it funny. They're just telling the story and playing it straight. It's weirdly refreshing.
