Those guards were pretty good actors. They pretended to be shocked by having to watch a human get killed right in front of them, but in reality they were going to enjoy it. It's such a power trip for them to be able to decide if someone lives or dies, while they are perfectly safe, themselves, and don't need to dirty their own hands.
