I love how this Netherlands reference to same-sex marriage keeps popping up.
No Japan, the Netherlands is no longer unique for having it — rather, Japan is unique for not having it.
Besides it was merely a matter of labels and semantics, the Netherlands has had "same sex marriage" since the 1980s, it was just called a "registered partnership", but it was legally completely functionally identical.
